...His seascapes are like no other seascapes."

THE CREATION OF SPACE
and the artistry of "Villa Lobos"

The creation of space on a flat surface is a technique learned early in any serious artist's career. But the creation of interesting, even beautiful space, is carried to a peak in the work of Villa Lobos. His technical mastery of the medium (usually oil, but he is more than proficient in various other media) is even surpassed by his ability to transport the viewer to his own special "space."

And make no mistake that it is special. The mystery which fills his canvas may be joyous or melancholy, but it is expressed in Villa Lobos' own terms; his seascapes are like no other seascapes, his "caves", some of which are my own special favorites, are spaces which he must know intimately, but I am sure that I have been there too, at least in my dreams. One must of course be reminded of the French Impressionists in Villa Lobos' approach to painting, but his style and the colors of his palette are very personal. The subtlety of his light, his use of glowing color (even his purples seem to have an inner illumination) are qualities which can only be described as "beautiful," a word not in fashion in art in these times, but the basis for any true appreciation.
